Teachers are human too.

Teachers are human too.

It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary. – Mandy Hale

For many of us, it is second nature to put others before ourselves. Whether it be your children, your partner, or your students – it seems so easy to ease the burden of others while wholly neglecting ourselves. However, neglecting ourselves means that we have less to give to those around us – and we’re really not setting the best example for them about how to appreciate and care for ourselves. But what does caring for yourself really mean?

We see a significant uptick in ‘self-care’ all over social media during this time of the year – from endless Buzzfeed lists pushing ‘essential’ self-care products to photos of your friends slathered in face masks on #SelfcareSunday. But, for me, self-care has become an adventure I have let myself go on. I have spent the last few weeks trying to focus on what self-care actually means for me. Now listen, I won’t lie, I do love a good face mask, but as I find myself more and more stressed with work on a daily basis, I can’t help but feel like sometimes a face mask just doesn’t really cut it. I mean, we’re all different right? So how can we expect our definitions of self-care to fit the same mold?

So, one of my personal goals this year is to truly figure out what self-care means for me – without the restrictions of what social media tells me it should be. I have found that real self-care is individual to all of us – and changes with each day based on what we need. For me, self-care is cooking an elaborate meal and deep cleaning the bathroom. Other days, it is getting brunch with friends and talking about the stresses of our jobs and families. Occasionally, it is laying on the couch binging Cheer on Netflix with our dog.

So, what was the point of this post? Well, I have a challenge for you: to really try to figure out what self-care actually means for you. I am genuinely excited to hear how you define self-care and how you’re able to make yourself a priority each and every day!

Teach on,
